By late summer of 2020, there appeared to be a new order for travelers; mask up and keep your distance.

For travelers, bargains were to be had. When friend Rosalie asked if I’d like to go for a few days stay at Hot Springs,Virginia's iconic Homestead Resort in Sept 2020, I quickly replied, “YES”. I had heard wonderful things about the 250 year old property, now owned and managed by Omni Hotels.

By this time, most travelers were expected to adhere to strict masking guidelines put in place by virtually every airline, hotel, restaurant, and shop. Ready for adventure, Rosalie and I packed bathing suits, hiking gear and plenty of masks before zipping off for the Allegheny Mountains. Neither of us had any idea what to expect during those turbulent days of pandemic vaca.

The Homestead did not disappoint. Due to the greatly reduced number of travelers, we were assigned a beautiful suite for about half of what it normally costs. Our lovely accommodation in the historic main building included an attached sitting room overlooking the sweeping grounds of the property.

Rosalie and I enjoyed relaxing in the spa's natural hot springs, hiking on the well marked trails, and savoring delicious meals served alfresco under cozy heaters.

Two highlights included a falconry lesson and what I consider the best nature hike I’ve ever taken.

One of the many falls along the Cascades Gorge Trail

Brian La Fountain, a naturalist and wonderful storyteller, enthusiastically engaged a small group of us during our Cascade Gorge hike made available through the resort. We learned about the natural "roots" of root beer, stood in awe among some of America's oldest trees, and enjoyed feet exfoliation courtesy of garra (nibble) fish. While standing in six inches of water, this species gathers in clusters and literally sucks the dead skin off of your feet. Within minutes your toes and soles feel amazingly soft.

Traveler’s Tip: Garra fish exfoliation sounds weird, but if you ever have the chance to experience this unusual “spa” treatment, give it a whirl.

During the day, Rosalie and I enjoyed shopping in town, exploring the sprawling property, and after dinner, we amused ourselves by shooting a few games of pool. It took no time to discover that my friend Rose (mother of three, grandmother of one, artist, and musician) is also a pool shark.

The Homestead Resort is geared for the golfer, the adventurer, friends, couples and most especially families. Best of all, in 2023 - no masks are necessary!

Traveler’s Tip: Drive to the Homestead if possible. Virginia highways and byways are in great shape and the scenery will take your breath away.
